Dangdai Dolls Symbolize Reversal of Fortune for New China

The iconic images presented by Chinese contemporary artist Lee Shi-min’s Dangdai Dolls: The Great Doll of China are testament to the progress of civil society that in modern day China the only mental and corporeal constraints upon females, whose status was once restricted by sexist social mores and whose mobility was hindered by ritual bondage of feet, have been relegated to the superfluous uppermost flowing appendages of the human body as vestigial remains expressed in knotted braided kernels and grains of hair.

The visages of the vector dolls, with a true sense of direction, constitute respectable graphic displays that incorporate animist imagery and reverent reworkings and reappropriations of Chinese emblematic elements.

Dark-haired doe-eyed Dangdai Doll Dai-dai, of the present-day Dang dynasty and the modern-day explorer-character from Lee Shi-min’s Dangdai Dolls: The Great Doll of China series, the lead doll of the 12 vivacious young women from the Land of the Dolls, Vernal Village of Dangdai, Rainbow Forest, Valley of the Falls, Foothills of the Mountain of Heavenly Calls, upon her graceful black horse Nuo-nuo, has been described by art critics and observers as the Lara Croft of the East.

Contemporary Artist to Issue Trinity of Musical Works to Accompany Famed Doll Series

Chinese contemporary artist Lee Shi-min has announced an initiative to release a trinity of musical works he has termed Dances of the Dolls to accompany his Dangdai Dolls: The Great Doll of China series and characters. Following the successful release of his acclaimed Dollonaise No.1, March of the Dolls in the grand tradition of the Polish polonaise in July 2009 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, a Dollero after the Latin Spanish-Cuban bolero and Dolltz after the Austrian-German waltz are to be released in due course.

The critically acclaimed art anthem dollonaise accompanies the twelve Dangdai Dolls: The Great Doll of China, based on the artist’s Dangdai serial works, in what some consider an underscoring of 30 years of China’s continuing reform and opening up policy initiated in December 1978.

Unlike the March of the Volunteers, China’s national anthem, the March of the Dolls is not a call to bear arms nor resistance against invading forces but an allegory for cross-cultural understanding, exchange and embrace, open-minded, tolerant, caring societies, and local, global and universal harmony.

Hua Koi Tie (2008) by Chinese contemporary artist Lee Shi-min is a large-format (oil on canvas, 60 by 75 inches, 152.4 by 190.5 cm) painting that features a polytonal blue rectilinear facial silhouette of the Honourable Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s first native-born and current Chief Executive, set within and against a dynamic polytonal green undulating motif of 576 life-size bow-ties. Thirty-two polychromatic koi of different scales weave around the silhouette delineating the Chinese character for Tsang while nineteen purple-pink bauhinia flowers of various sizes and proportions flow randomly about, the two elemental sets along with Tsang’s image effectively fragmented by tie-lines in the elegant, evocative, well-balanced composition.

Hua Koi Tie is a strong, colourful, powerful work in celebration and respect of Tsang’s steadfast commitment, unwavering devotion and laudable stewardship of Hong Kong, an allegory of Tsang as a safe harbour for all, and a vibrant symbol representing his constant conviction and enduring dedication of over four decades of outstanding civil service at the auspicious, venerable age of 64 years — an appropriately impressive piece in honour of Tsang’s great contribution to the well-being, prosperity and development of the renowned port city.

In artistic terms, Hua Koi Tie is a fresh, innovative and original work of clarity and vision that draws upon both animist and secular imagery to realize an exemplary work of Chinese post-reunification art — a historically significant and important painting being the first and only modern visualization by a prominent contemporary artist of the leading living political head of China’s southern-most major coastal region.

The work employs the three primary Chinese symbolic colors red, green and yellow, and was realized to honor the subject’s great athletic and sporting achievements at such an early age.

Obama 44 by Chinese contemporary artist Lee Shi-min is a large-format (oil on canvas, 1.72 m square) painting that incorporates Chinese characters for Barack Obama with a beautiful rendering of a dual set of Chinese characters for the number for forty-four which takes the form of a cross. The work employs the five Chinese symbolic colors red, black, green, yellow and blue, and was realized to commemorate the upcoming change of leadership in the United States, a positive, quantum leap forward for the American people, that is experiencing a groundswell of enthusiasm not felt since the Kennedy years.

Barack Obama, the presidential hopeful, was born on August 4, 1961, the 4th day of the 8th month of the Chinese year of the Ox. His anticipated historic inauguration in 2009 as the first African-American president in the history of the United States will coincide with the completion of four cycles of the Chinese animal zodiac in his 48th year of life. These auspicious indicators or signs have been deftly symbolized and represented in Obama 44.
